State Conference 2009: Create
On the weekend of the 14th and 15th of March 2009, DRAMA QUEENSLAND held its annual State Conference for the second year running at the Southbank Institute of Technology’s creative precinct. Inspired by the recent launch of the Year of Creativity the DRAMA QUEENSLAND management committee themed this year’s conference accordingly.
On Saturday the 14th approx 200 attendees had the great opportunity to participate in a variety of workshops from artists, educators, teacher-artists and researchers under the strands of Curriculum, New Works and Directions, Forms and Styles and Research. The delegates also had the opportunity to witness live performances from the acting students of the Southbank Institute of Technology and from Zeal Theatre’s latest show The Forwards, presented by the Queensland Arts Council.
Highlights of the day included:
- Opening address by outgoing Education Minister Rod Welford, who highlighted the important role Drama Educators have in teaching QLD’s young people and preparing them for the future.
- Our Keynote Speaker, internationally renowned Queensland artist, Bille Brown left the audience in stiches with his antidotes and again a sense of value in there chosen role as a Drama Educator. He discussed among a variety of topics, the creative process in reference to the development of his new work, ‘The School of Arts’ presented by the Queensland Theatre Company as part of the Q150 celebrations in 2009.
- National Curriculum forum facilitated by Sandra Gattenhof and Josephine Wise, which explored the topic of: what it would look like without the inclusion of the Arts.
- On Sunday the 15th a group of over 20 delegates returned to Southbank to partake in a Master class presented by Tony Kishawi from Transient theatre on Commedia dell Arte.
